The SGS 51038 is a solid carbide jobber length drill bit in wire gauge size 38, with a decimal diameter of 0.1015 inches (2.58 mm). It features a 118-degree faceted point angle and a right-hand spiral flute configuration, making it suitable for precise small-diameter drilling in hard and abrasive materials. The bit ships in a bright, uncoated finish and is manufactured from micrograin solid carbide, which provides increased hardness and wear resistance compared to high-speed steel alternatives. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and precision fabricators typically use this bit on CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual mills where tight tolerances are required.
The SGS 51038 is intended for small-diameter precision drilling in production and job-shop environments. The 2.25-inch overall length and 1.25-inch flute length suit it for shallow to moderate-depth holes in materials such as cast iron, hardened steel, stainless steel, and non-ferrous alloys. The web-thinned, tapered web design reduces thrust load at the cutting edge, which is particularly useful when drilling gummy or work-hardening materials. This bit is sold individually and is appropriate wherever a wire gauge size 38 hole is required to close dimensional tolerances.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or standard tooling selection for any drill press, CNC machining center, or manual mill equipped with a collet or drill chuck capable of holding a 0.1015-inch straight-cylindrical shank in wire size range 0.1000 to 0.1500 inches.
Installation is performed by machinists or toolroom personnel following standard machine-tool chucking procedures. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and locked out before changing tooling. Seat the straight shank fully into the collet or drill chuck and verify runout before initiating a cut. Do not exceed the maximum drilling depth of 1.00 inch without retracting to clear chips, as carbide is brittle and susceptible to breakage under side-load or peck-drilling abuse.
