The SGS 51017 is a solid carbide jobber-length drill bit in wire gauge size No. 17, with a decimal diameter of 0.1730 inches (4.39 mm). It features a 118-degree faceted point angle and a bright uncoated finish. At 2.75 inches overall length with a 1.625-inch spiral flute, this bit is engineered for precision hole-making in a wide range of materials. The micrograin carbide substrate delivers hardness and wear resistance suited to production drilling environments. A right-hand, regular spiral flute design ensures efficient chip evacuation. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die makers, and metalworking professionals typically rely on this type of bit for accurate, repeatable results.
This bit is well suited for drilling ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, and composites in machine shop, manufacturing, and maintenance-repair-operations settings. Its straight cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks on drill presses, CNC machining centers, and hand-held power drills. The 5xD flute-to-diameter ratio supports drilling depths appropriate for general-purpose jobber-length applications. It conforms to DIN 338 standards, making it a recognized fit in shops that specify compliance with that specification.
Designed as a standard jobber-length replacement or stock bit for use in any drill chuck or collet system accepting a 0.1730-inch straight cylindrical shank across drill presses, CNC machines, and portable power drills.
Secure the straight shank fully in the chuck or collet before operation and verify runout is within acceptable tolerance for the application. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for the work material when drilling metals to manage heat buildup and extend bit life. Note that this bit does not support coolant-through delivery. Inspect the cutting edges before use and replace the bit if chipping or wear is detected, as carbide bits can fracture if run in an out-of-true setup.
