The SGS 49166 is a stub-length, square-profile solid carbide end mill designed for precision milling in a wide range of metalworking applications. It measures 0.2362 inches in diameter with a matching 0.2362-inch straight-cylindrical shank and a 0.4724-inch length of cut. The four-flute geometry with a 30-degree right-hand spiral helix promotes efficient chip evacuation and smooth surface finishes. A TiCN coating adds surface hardness and lubricity, extending tool life when cutting ferrous and non-ferrous materials. This tool is manufactured from micrograin solid carbide, providing the rigidity and edge retention required for tight-tolerance machining work. It is center-cutting capable, allowing plunge entry in addition to standard peripheral and slot milling.
This end mill is suited for use on CNC machining centers and manual knee mills where small-diameter, high-precision cuts are required. The stub-length profile reduces deflection during aggressive radial passes. It is appropriate for use in die and mold work, aerospace component machining, and general precision part production. The SGS Series 16M designation indicates this tool is optimized for a broad workpiece material range including hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous alloys, high-temperature alloys, and titanium alloys, as indicated by material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard tooling option for CNC machining centers and manual mills accepting 0.2362-inch straight-cylindrical shank end mills. Compatible with standard ER collet chucks and end mill holders sized for 6 mm shank diameter. Workpiece material compatibility covers material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S as specified for the SGS Series 16M.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Secure the shank fully into the collet or holder to the recommended engagement depth to minimize runout; never grip on the fluted portion. Verify spindle runout with a dial indicator before beginning a cut, as excessive runout accelerates edge wear on small-diameter carbide tools. Handle solid carbide tooling carefully to avoid edge chipping from contact with hard surfaces during storage and setup.
