The SGS 38174 is a solid carbide corner radius end mill designed for high-performance milling across a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built to Series 01C specifications, it features a 1/2 inch cutting diameter, 1 inch length of cut, and a 0.015 inch corner radius that reduces stress concentration at the cutting edge and extends tool life in demanding applications. The AlTiN coating — marketed under SGS's Ti-NAMITE-A designation — provides thermal resistance and hardness retention at elevated cutting temperatures. With 4 flutes, a variable index, and a medium 30-degree helical flute geometry, the 38174 is suited for both roughing and finishing passes in a single-end, right-hand cutting configuration.
This end mill is intended for use in CNC machining centers and manual mills where consistent corner geometry is critical. Its micrograin carbide substrate and AlTiN coating make it appropriate for cutting steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, titanium, and hard materials. The Weldon flat shank is compatible with standard end mill holders and set-screw-style toolholders used in production and job shop environments. Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the spindle fully stopped and the machine in an e-stop or locked-out state per applicable shop safety procedures. Verify that the Weldon flat is properly engaged with the toolholder set screw before running the spindle. Inspect the corner radius and cutting edges for chips or wear before each use; a damaged corner radius will transfer dimensional error directly to the workpiece. Follow machine tool manufacturer guidelines and cutting data recommendations for feed rate, depth of cut, and spindle speed when running carbide tooling in hard or abrasive materials.
