The SGS 38172 is a solid carbide corner radius end mill designed for high-performance milling of steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, and titanium. The 3/8-inch cutting diameter pairs with a 0.03-inch corner radius to blend strength with precision at the cutting edge. An AlTiN coating under SGS's Ti-NAMITE-A designation improves heat resistance and tool life in demanding cuts. With 4 flutes and a medium helix, the 38172 handles both roughing and finishing passes in a single setup. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die professionals use this end mill in CNC machining centers with standard end mill holders.
This end mill is suited for milling operations in job shops, production facilities, and tool rooms working primarily with ferrous and superalloy materials. The 1-inch length of cut, 2.5-inch overall length, and 3/8-inch Weldon flat shank make it a practical fit for medium-depth slotting, profiling, and contouring work where corner radius blending is required. The variable index geometry reduces harmonic chatter during heavier cuts. Hard materials are listed as a secondary workpiece material category, extending the range of the tool when cutting hardened steels.
Designed for use with standard end mill holders. Compatible with CNC machining centers and manual mills accepting a 3/8-inch Weldon flat shank. Suitable for primary workpiece materials including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and superalloys and titanium; secondary application in hard materials.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the machine tool manufacturer's setup procedures. Secure the Weldon flat shank fully into a clean, undamaged end mill holder and tighten set screws against the flat to prevent axial pullout. Verify spindle runout with a dial indicator before cutting to protect the corner radius geometry. Follow the machine shop's established speeds and feeds guidelines for the workpiece material and coating type.
