The SGS 36480 is a solid carbide ball end mill designed for high-performance milling operations in demanding materials. Built on the Z1PLB series platform, it features a 0.25 inch diameter with a 0.5 inch length of cut and a 4 inch overall length. The 4-flute variable helix and variable index geometry reduce harmonic vibration and chatter during cuts, improving surface finish and tool life. An AlTiN coating provides thermal resistance and hardness at elevated cutting temperatures. The micrograin carbide substrate supports rigidity and edge retention in difficult-to-machine alloys and hardened steels. This tool is installed and run by machinists and CNC programmers in job shops, aerospace manufacturing, and precision machining environments.
The SGS 36480 is suited for finishing passes in materials coded H, K, M, P, and S, covering hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, carbon steels, and high-temperature superalloys. Its long-series configuration with a 0.75 inch neck length and 1.25 inch reach length makes it effective for milling deeper pockets and contoured surfaces where standard-length tools cannot reach. Right-hand cutting and right-hand spiral flutes are standard. This is a single-end tool.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers and milling machines accepting a 0.25 inch shank. Compatible with workpiece material codes H, K, M, P, and S as specified by SGS for this series.
Install this end mill in a compatible collet or toolholder rated for 0.25 inch shanks, ensuring the toolholder is clean and free of chips before seating. Confirm runout is within acceptable limits before beginning a cut, as excess runout accelerates wear on small-diameter carbide tools. Always set spindle speed and feed rate according to the material being cut and the depth of cut; do not begin a pass at full depth without verifying the setup. Handle solid carbide tooling carefully to avoid chipping the cutting edges.
