The SGS 33117 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling in metalworking and machining applications. It features a 1 inch cutting diameter, a 2.25 inch length of cut, and a 5 inch overall length with a 1 inch straight cylindrical shank. Manufactured from micrograin solid carbide, this tool offers the rigidity and wear resistance required for demanding material removal. The 4-flute, right-hand spiral configuration with variable index geometry reduces chatter and improves surface finish across a range of workpiece materials. This is a centercutting tool, allowing plunge entry directly into the workpiece.
The SGS 33117 is suited for milling ferrous and non-ferrous metals across multiple material categories including cast iron, non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, aluminum, steel, and heat-resistant superalloys. The long series designation (Series 1L) provides extended reach for deeper pockets and slots where standard-length end mills cannot reach. It is used in vertical and horizontal machining centers, CNC mills, and manual knee mills by machinists and tool-and-die tradespeople in production and job shop environments.
Compatible with workpiece material categories H, K, M, N, P, and S, corresponding to cast iron, non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, aluminum, steel, and heat-resistant superalloys. Fits any machine spindle or toolholder accepting a 1 inch straight cylindrical shank.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following standard toolholding practices. Ensure the shank is fully seated in a collet, hydraulic chuck, or shrink-fit holder rated for the shank diameter before use. Verify spindle runout is within acceptable limits before engaging the cut, as excessive runout accelerates tool wear and degrades surface finish. Always refer to the machine tool manufacturer guidelines and applicable shop safety protocols when setting speeds and feeds.
