The SGS 31883 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for high-performance milling in demanding metal-cutting applications. It features a 5/16 inch cutting diameter, a 1-5/8 inch length of cut, and a 4 inch overall length, placing it in the extra-long category for reach into deeper cavities. The four-flute configuration with a 30-degree spiral helix and AlTiN coating delivers heat resistance and edge durability when cutting at elevated speeds. The variable index design reduces harmonic vibration, improving surface finish and tool life. This end mill is intended for use by machinists and CNC operators in production and job-shop environments.
The SGS 31883 is suited for milling ferrous metals, non-ferrous alloys, high-temperature alloys, and composite materials, corresponding to workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. The extra-long length of cut makes it appropriate for slotting, profiling, and pocketing operations where standard-length tools cannot reach. The straight cylindrical shank and right-hand cut with right-hand flute geometry fit conventional vertical and horizontal CNC machining centers. The centercutting capability allows plunge entry without a pre-drilled start hole.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers and manual mills accepting a 5/16 inch straight cylindrical shank. Compatible with workpiece materials coded H, K, M, N, P, and S per the supplier specification, covering a broad range of metals and alloys. Part of the SGS Series 1EL extra-long end mill family.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and the tool changer or collet system de-energized before inserting or removing the end mill. Use a properly sized collet or end mill holder rated for the 5/16 inch shank diameter to ensure concentricity and minimize runout. Inspect the cutting edges and coating for chips or damage before mounting; a damaged tool can fracture under load.
