The SGS 31881 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision material removal in demanding machining applications. The 31881 features a 3/16 inch cutting diameter with a 1-1/8 inch length of cut and a 3-inch overall length, classifying it as an extra-long reach tool within the Series 1EL lineup. The AlTiN coating provides heat resistance and wear protection at elevated cutting speeds. Four spiral flutes with a 30-degree helix angle and a variable index geometry promote chip evacuation and reduce chatter. The centercutting design allows plunge entry, giving machinists flexibility in toolpath strategy.
This end mill is suited for milling operations across a broad range of workpiece materials including steels, stainless steels, cast irons, non-ferrous alloys, high-temperature alloys, and titanium, as indicated by the primary material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. The extra-long length of cut makes it appropriate for slotting, profiling, and pocketing in areas where standard-length tools cannot reach. It is typically used in CNC machining centers and manual mills in job shop, tool-and-die, aerospace, and general metalworking environments.
The SGS 31881 uses a 3/16 inch straight-cylindrical shank and is compatible with standard collet chucks, end mill holders, and shrink-fit toolholders sized for 3/16 inch shank diameters. Suitable for workpiece materials classified under codes H, K, M, N, P, and S per the supplier specification.
Installation is performed by a machinist or CNC operator using an appropriate toolholder torqued to the machine manufacturer's specification. Verify shank runout with a dial indicator before beginning a cut, as runout beyond tolerance will accelerate edge wear given the small diameter. Ensure the toolholder bore is clean and free of chips before seating the shank. Follow shop safety protocols and machine guarding requirements whenever changing or setting cutting tools.
