The SGS 31874 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling operations across a broad range of workpiece materials. It features a 3/8-inch cutting diameter, a 1-3/4-inch length of cut, and a 4-inch overall length, placing it in the extra-long category for extended reach applications. The four-flute, spiral configuration with a 30-degree helix angle promotes efficient chip evacuation and surface finish quality. A titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating adds surface hardness and wear resistance. The variable index flute spacing reduces harmonic vibration during aggressive cuts. Licensed machinists and tooling professionals install this end mill in CNC machining centers and manual knee mills.
The SGS 31874 is suited for milling operations on cast iron, non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, carbon steel, heat-resistant alloys, and non-metallic materials corresponding to material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. The extra-long length of cut makes it appropriate for deep pocket milling, slotting, and profiling where standard-length tools cannot reach. The center-cutting geometry allows the tool to plunge directly into a workpiece without a pre-drilled pilot hole, expanding its range of practical applications on the shop floor.
The SGS 31874 belongs to the Series 1EL extra-long end mill family. It accepts standard straight-cylindrical tool holders with a 3/8-inch bore diameter, compatible with ER collet chucks, end mill holders, and Weldon-style holders sized for 3/8-inch shank tooling.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician familiar with CNC or manual milling equipment. Always power down and lock out the spindle before changing tooling. Seat the shank fully within the holder to the minimum engagement depth recommended by the holder manufacturer, and torque the retention hardware per the holder specification. Inspect the cutting edges for chips or wear before each use and replace the tool if edge integrity is compromised.
