The SGS 31817 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision material removal in demanding machining environments. Built from micrograin carbide with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) finish, this tool offers enhanced wear resistance and extended tool life compared to uncoated alternatives. It features a 5/8 inch cutting diameter, a 2-1/4 inch length of cut, and a 5 inch overall length, placing it in the long-series (Series 3L) category. The two-flute, spiral geometry with a 30-degree helix angle promotes efficient chip evacuation. Centercutting capability allows plunge entry. This end mill is installed and operated by CNC machinists and tool-and-die professionals.
The SGS 31817 is suited for milling operations across a broad range of workpiece materials, including steels, hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous metals, and high-temperature alloys, corresponding to material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. Its long length of cut makes it appropriate for deep-pocket milling, slotting, and profiling applications where standard-length end mills cannot reach. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard ER or straight-bore collet systems. Both right-hand cut and right-hand flute orientation are standard on this tool.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers and manual mills equipped with collet chucks or straight-bore tool holders accepting a 5/8 inch shank diameter. Suitable for workpiece material groups H, K, M, N, P, and S as designated by the supplier.
This end mill is installed by qualified machinists following standard toolholding procedures. Before tool changes, ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe, locked-out state. Seat the shank fully in the collet or chuck and torque the retaining nut to the toolholder manufacturer's specification. Verify runout with a dial indicator before beginning a cut, as excessive runout accelerates tool wear and degrades surface finish.
