The SGS 31814 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision metal removal in demanding machining applications. It features a 3/8 inch cutting diameter, a 1-1/8 inch length of cut, and a 3 inch overall length, placing it in the long-series 3L category. The micrograin carbide substrate is finished with TiCN coating, which improves surface hardness and wear resistance compared to uncoated tooling. Two spiral flutes with a 30-degree helix angle promote efficient chip evacuation. The straight cylindrical 3/8 inch shank is compatible with standard end mill holders and collet chucks. This tool is installed and operated by machinists and toolroom technicians working on CNC and manual milling machines.
The SGS 31814 is suited for milling operations across a broad range of workpiece materials, including carbon steels, alloy steels, stainless steels, cast irons, non-ferrous metals, and high-temperature alloys, as indicated by primary workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. Its centercutting geometry allows plunge entry as well as conventional peripheral and slot milling. The long-series length of cut makes it appropriate for applications requiring extended reach into pockets, slots, or contoured features where a standard-length end mill cannot clear the workpiece.
Designed as an OEM-style solid carbide end mill for use in standard end mill holders, collet chucks, and shrink-fit toolholders accepting a 3/8 inch straight cylindrical shank on CNC machining centers and manual knee mills.
Installation and tool changes should be performed with the machine spindle fully stopped and the control in a safe state per shop safety procedures. Seat the shank fully into the holder and torque the retention screw or collet nut per the toolholder manufacturer's specification. Inspect the cutting edges for chips or coating damage before use. TiCN-coated carbide tooling should not be run with cutting fluids that contain high sulfur concentrations, as this can degrade the coating prematurely.
