The SGS 31743 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision metal removal in demanding machining applications. It features a 0.5-inch cutting diameter, a 2-inch length of cut, and a 0.5-inch straight-cylindrical shank with a 4.5-inch overall length. The tool is ground from micrograin carbide stock and finished with a TiCN coating, which improves surface hardness and wear resistance compared to uncoated tooling. Four spiral flutes with a 30-degree helix angle and variable index geometry reduce chatter and improve chip evacuation. The centercutting design allows plunge entry. Right-hand cut and right-hand flute orientation are standard. This end mill is installed by machinists and tool-and-die professionals operating CNC and manual milling equipment.
The SGS 31743 is suited for milling ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The primary workpiece material codes listed by the manufacturer are H, K, M, N, P, and S, covering cast iron, non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, non-metals, steel, and heat-resistant superalloys respectively. The long-series (Series 1L) configuration provides extended reach for deeper cavity work, shoulder milling, and slotting where standard-length tools cannot reach the full depth of cut. It is appropriate for both roughing and finishing passes depending on feed and speed selection.
Designed as a long-series OEM-style solid carbide square end mill compatible with standard 0.5-inch straight-shank collet chucks and milling holders on CNC machining centers and manual knee mills. Workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S are supported per manufacturer specification.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following shop safety procedures. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is locked out before changing tooling. Secure the shank to the specified collet or end mill holder torque recommendation provided by the holder manufacturer. Verify runout with a dial indicator after installation before beginning a cut, as excessive runout accelerates edge wear and reduces surface finish quality.
