The SGS 31713 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling in a wide range of metalworking applications. It features a 1/4 inch diameter cutting end with a 1/2 inch length of cut and a 2 inch overall length. The two-flute spiral geometry runs at a 30-degree helix angle, promoting efficient chip evacuation and smooth cutting action. Built from micrograin solid carbide, this end mill delivers the rigidity and edge retention needed for demanding cuts in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The stub-length configuration provides added stiffness, reducing deflection during aggressive passes. It ships bright/uncoated and is center-cutting capable, allowing plunge entry.
This end mill is suited for job shops, tool rooms, and production machining environments. The 30-degree right-hand helix and right-hand cutting direction make it a standard choice for conventional and climb milling on CNC machining centers and manual knee mills. Primary workpiece material codes indicate suitability across cast iron, non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, general steels, heat-resistant superalloys, and free-machining steels. The 1/4 inch straight-cylindrical shank fits standard collets and end mill holders commonly found in both vertical and horizontal setups.
Designed as a Series 17 SGS stub-length square end mill. Compatible with any machine spindle or toolholder accepting a 1/4 inch straight-cylindrical shank. Suitable for milling cast iron, non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, carbon and alloy steels, heat-resistant superalloys, and free-machining steels per primary workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S.
Installation is performed by a machinist or tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully powered down and the tool is seated to the full shank depth within the collet or end mill holder before tightening. Verify runout with a dial indicator before beginning cuts, especially in tight-tolerance applications. Follow shop safety protocols and applicable OSHA machining guidelines when handling carbide tooling.
