The SGS 31479 is a double-end, square-profile solid carbide end mill designed for precision milling in a wide range of metalworking applications. It measures 0.5 inches in cutting diameter with a 0.625-inch length of cut and a 3-inch overall length. The 0.5-inch straight-cylindrical shank provides secure tool holding in standard collet chucks and shrink-fit holders. Built from micrograin solid carbide with a TiN coating, the 31479 delivers consistent edge retention and surface finish across ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Four right-hand spiral flutes at a 30-degree helix angle promote efficient chip evacuation and reduce cutting forces. This is a centercutting tool capable of plunge entry. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and CNC operators install this type of end mill in vertical and horizontal machining centers.
The 31479 is suited for milling operations on materials spanning cast iron, aluminum, copper alloys, titanium, steel, and superalloys, corresponding to workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. Its stub-length classification positions the cutting edge close to the spindle nose, which reduces deflection and improves rigidity in shallow-to-mid-depth pocketing, slotting, and profiling operations. The double-end configuration allows the second cutting end to be indexed into service once the first end is worn, extending tool life between replacements. This part is sold individually in single-unit packaging with a minimum order quantity of one.
Compatible with workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S, covering cast iron, non-ferrous metals, copper alloys, titanium, steel, and superalloys. Designed for use with standard 0.5-inch collet chucks, end mill holders, and shrink-fit tooling systems on CNC machining centers and manual knee mills.
Installation and tool changes must be performed with the machine spindle fully stopped and locked out per applicable machine safety procedures. Use a properly sized collet or end mill holder rated for 0.5-inch shank diameter and ensure the shank is inserted to the full recommended engagement depth before tightening. Inspect the tool holder bore and collet for runout before use, as excessive runout accelerates edge wear on carbide tooling. Follow the machine manufacturer feed-and-speed guidelines for the specific workpiece material being cut.
