The SGS 31477 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling in a wide range of metalworking applications. Built to Series 14 stub-length specifications, it features a 7/16 inch cutting diameter, a 9/16 inch length of cut, and a 2-3/4 inch overall length. The 4-flute, right-hand spiral configuration delivers efficient chip evacuation and a clean finish on the workpiece. A TiN (titanium nitride) coating adds surface hardness and heat resistance, extending tool life in demanding cuts. The centercutting geometry allows plunge entry, giving machinists flexibility in slotting and pocket milling operations. This is a double-end tool, providing two usable cutting ends per shank.
This end mill suits production machining environments where stub-length rigidity is preferred over extended reach. The straight cylindrical shank accommodates standard collet and end mill holders. Primary workpiece material codes rated for this tool include H, K, M, N, P, and S, covering hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous metals, carbon steels, and heat-resistant superalloys. It is appropriate for milling centers, CNC machining cells, and manual knee mills where consistent dimensional accuracy is required.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement or standard addition for setups requiring a 7/16 inch straight cylindrical shank end mill in a Series 14 stub-length configuration. Compatible with standard ER collets, end mill holders, and shrink-fit tooling accepting a 7/16 inch shank diameter.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the tool holder manufacturer torque and runout specifications. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before installing or removing the tool. Verify shank seating depth against the tool holder minimum engagement spec to prevent pullout under cutting loads. Confirm that coolant delivery and feed-and-speed parameters are set to values appropriate for the workpiece material before commencing the cut.
