The SGS 31431 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling operations in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It features a 9/32 inch (0.2813 inch) cutting diameter, a 1/2 inch length of cut, and a 5/16 inch straight-cylindrical shank. Overall length is 2-1/2 inches, placing it in the stub length category. The four-flute, spiral design with a 30-degree helix angle supports efficient chip evacuation and smooth surface finishes. Micrograin carbide construction delivers hardness and edge retention that high-speed steel tooling cannot match. This is an uncoated, centercutting end mill capable of both peripheral and plunge cuts.
The SGS 31431 is suited for milling slots, pockets, profiling, and contour work on CNC machining centers and manual mills. Its stub length geometry reduces deflection in tight setups where a standard-length end mill would flex under load. Right-hand cut and right-hand flute orientation are standard for conventional spindle configurations. The Series 14 classification designates it as a general-purpose double-end design within the SGS lineup, making it a practical choice for job shops, tool rooms, and production environments handling a variety of workpiece materials.
Rated for use across primary workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S, covering hardened materials, cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous metals, steel, and heat-resistant superalloys. Designed as an OEM-style cutting tool compatible with standard straight-bore end mill holders and collet chucks accepting a 5/16 inch shank diameter.
Installation is performed by a machinist or CNC setup technician. Secure the 5/16 inch shank in a properly sized collet or end mill holder, ensuring adequate tool stick-out is minimized to reduce vibration and deflection. Verify spindle speed and feed rate are appropriate for the workpiece material and cut depth before engaging the tool. Inspect the cutting edges for chips or wear before each use, as carbide tools can fail suddenly if run with damaged flutes.
