The SGS 31420 is a solid carbide ball end mill designed for precision milling operations across a wide range of workpiece materials. Built to Series 14B standards, this double-end tool features a 0.1719-inch diameter cutting edge, a 0.3125-inch length of cut, and a 30-degree helix angle that promotes efficient chip evacuation and smooth cutting action. The micrograin carbide construction delivers the edge retention and rigidity needed for close-tolerance work in demanding shop environments. With four flutes and a right-hand cutting and flute direction, the 31420 is suited for finishing passes and contour work where surface quality matters. Licensed machinists and CNC operators are the primary end users.
This ball end mill is used in CNC machining centers and manual mills for profiling, contouring, and slotting operations. The double-end configuration provides two usable cutting ends, extending tool life between changeovers. The stub length type and 2-inch overall length make it practical for short-reach applications where rigidity is a priority. Primary workpiece material codes cover a broad spectrum including hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous metals, general steels, and high-temperature alloys.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use cutting tool compatible with CNC machining centers and manual milling machines accepting a 3/16-inch straight shank. Compatible with workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S as specified by the manufacturer.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. The spindle must be powered down and the machine placed in an estop or lockout-tagout state before changing tooling. Use an appropriate collet or end mill holder that matches the 3/16-inch shank diameter and tighten to the holder manufacturer's specification. Verify tool runout with a dial indicator after installation before beginning a cut cycle.
