The SGS 31409 is a double-end, four-flute square end mill ground from micrograin solid carbide. It carries a 3/32-inch (0.0938-inch) cutting diameter, a 3/16-inch length of cut, and an overall length of 1-1/2 inches. The stub-length geometry keeps the tool rigid under load, reducing deflection on short, precise milling passes. A 30-degree right-hand spiral helix promotes efficient chip evacuation, and the bright uncoated finish makes the tool suitable for a broad range of materials without the risk of coating adhesion issues. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die makers, and CNC operators running production or prototype work are the primary installers of this tool.
The 31409 is suited for milling operations on ferrous alloys, non-ferrous metals, cast iron, high-temperature alloys, and plastics, corresponding to primary workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. The 1/8-inch straight cylindrical shank fits standard collet chucks and end-mill holders on vertical machining centers, CNC routers, and manual knee mills. Its double-end design extends usable tool life by providing two cutting ends per shank, which reduces tooling cost per edge on high-volume runs.
Compatible with workpiece materials classified under codes H, K, M, N, P, and S, including cast iron, non-ferrous metals, stainless and heat-resistant alloys, plastics, and general steel. Fits any standard 1/8-inch collet or end-mill holder.
This tool is installed by machinists and CNC operators using standard collet chucks or end-mill holders sized for a 1/8-inch straight shank. Ensure the spindle is fully de-energized and locked before changing tooling. Verify collet runout is within acceptable tolerance before operation, as excessive runout accelerates wear on small-diameter carbide tooling. Do not exceed the machine manufacturer's recommended speed and feed parameters for the workpiece material and tool diameter.
