The SGS 31254 is a 4-flute, solid carbide square end mill designed for high-performance milling in a wide range of metalworking applications. It features a 5/32-inch cutting diameter, a 5/16-inch length of cut, and a 3/16-inch straight cylindrical shank, with a 2-inch overall length that fits standard toolholders used in CNC and manual milling setups. The AlTiN (aluminum titanium nitride) coating provides elevated heat resistance and surface hardness, extending tool life in demanding cuts. The stub-length configuration adds rigidity, reducing deflection during aggressive passes. Machinists and tool and die professionals working with ferrous and non-ferrous materials will find this end mill suited to finishing and light roughing operations.
The SGS 31254 is used in vertical machining centers, CNC mills, and knee mills for slotting, profiling, and peripheral milling. Its stub-length geometry makes it a strong choice when minimal tool overhang is required or when machining in tight-clearance areas. The right-hand cut and right-hand spiral flute configuration is standard for conventional milling setups. The Series 16 designation places this tool in SGS's line of general-purpose carbide end mills suited for a broad material range.
Designed for use with materials coded H, K, M, N, P, and S per standard workpiece material classifications, covering tool steels, cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous metals, steel, and heat-resistant alloys. Fits any 3/16-inch collet or toolholder accepting a straight-cylindrical shank.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following shop-standard tool change procedures. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before inserting or removing the end mill. Seat the shank fully in the collet or toolholder to the recommended engagement depth per the toolholder manufacturer's guidelines. Verify runout with a dial indicator after clamping before beginning any cut.
