The SGS 31174 is a double-end, four-flute square end mill ground from solid micrograin carbide and coated with AlTiN for extended tool life in demanding cutting applications. It carries a 3/32 inch (0.0938 inch) cutting diameter, a 3/16 inch length of cut, and a 1/8 inch straight-cylindrical shank. The 30-degree right-hand spiral helix promotes efficient chip evacuation and reduces heat buildup at the cutting edge. At 1-1/2 inches overall length, this is a stub-length tool sized for rigid setups where minimizing deflection is a priority. Installation is performed by machinists and toolroom operators working on CNC machining centers and manual mills.
This end mill is suited for milling operations on a range of workpiece materials, including hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous alloys, titanium, and high-temperature alloys, consistent with its listed primary workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. The double-end configuration doubles usable tool life before the tool is retired, making it a practical choice for production environments and job shops running mixed-material work. The centercutting geometry allows both plunge and peripheral milling operations.
Designed for use in standard straight-shank collet chucks and end mill holders accepting a 1/8 inch shank diameter. Compatible with CNC machining centers and manual knee mills equipped with appropriate toolholding. Workpiece material compatibility includes codes H, K, M, N, P, and S as specified by the manufacturer.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following standard toolholding procedures for straight-shank carbide end mills. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe, locked-out state before changing tooling. Seat the shank to the full recommended insertion depth in the collet or holder before tightening to prevent pullout under load. Do not use this tool beyond its rated cutting diameter or depth of cut without consulting manufacturer feed and speed data.
