The SGS 30478 is a 2-flute solid carbide ball end mill designed for precision milling operations across a wide range of materials. With a 0.125 inch mill diameter and a 0.5 inch length of cut, this single-end tool is built for contouring, profiling, and finishing passes where tight tolerances matter. The micrograin carbide substrate supports the AlTiN coating, which extends tool life in demanding cuts involving hardened steels, stainless, and exotic alloys. A 30-degree right-hand spiral helix promotes efficient chip evacuation and reduces cutting forces. This tool is installed by machinists and toolmakers working in job shops, production machining, and precision manufacturing environments.
The SGS 30478 is suited for milling ferrous and non-ferrous materials including steels, cast iron, stainless steel, non-ferrous metals, and superalloys. Its compact 0.125 inch diameter makes it a practical choice for fine-detail work, small-radius contouring, and slot or pocket milling in tight geometries. The 1.5 inch overall length and 0.125 inch shank diameter allow it to seat securely in standard collet systems. The Series 3B designation identifies it within the SGS product line for ball-nose general-purpose milling tools.
Designed for use with materials corresponding to primary workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S — covering hardened steels, cast iron, stainless steel, non-ferrous metals, carbon and alloy steels, and superalloys. Compatible with standard 0.125 inch collet and toolholder systems.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists using a compatible collet or end mill holder rated for the 0.125 inch shank diameter. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before changing tooling. Verify runout after seating, as shank diameter tolerance is +0.00001 to -0.00002 inches and excessive runout will accelerate edge wear. Follow the machine tool manufacturer and cutting tool manufacturer recommendations for speeds, feeds, and depth of cut for the specific workpiece material.
