The SECO 74030962 is an uncoated carbide turning insert designed for precision finishing operations on superalloys and titanium. It carries ANSI insert code VNGM331 and ISO code VNGM160404, fitting the VNGM-MF1 series toolholding system. The insert features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a sharp cutting edge and a corner radius of 0.0157 inches, optimized for the tight tolerances and demanding surface requirements of aerospace and high-performance alloy machining. Two cutting edges are available per insert. The MF1 chip breaker geometry targets finishing cuts, delivering controlled chip formation at shallow depths on difficult-to-machine materials. A licensed machinist or toolroom technician typically specifies and installs this insert.
This insert is intended for use in applications involving superalloys and titanium as the primary workpiece material, with secondary suitability for steel, cast iron, non-ferrous materials, and hardened materials. Multi-use applications include turning, back turning, facing, and profiling. It is suited to CNC lathes and turning centers where a VNGM-style toolholder with clamp, pin, or lever-lock holding is used. The sharp cutting edge and MF1 finishing chip breaker make it well-matched to finishing passes where surface finish and dimensional accuracy are critical. Grade 890 carbide substrate provides high wear resistance with moderate toughness, appropriate for the abrasive nature of superalloy and titanium cuts.

Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing inserts. Ensure the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces are clean and free of chips or debris before installing the insert. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's clamping procedure for lever-lock, pin, or clamp-style holders to achieve proper insert seating and avoid edge chipping.
