The SECO 63005950 is a rectangular cobalt tool bit blank ground from WKE45-grade cobalt high-speed steel. It measures 5/16 inches wide by 7/16 inches high with a 4-inch overall length. Tool bit blanks are unground, solid stock used by machinists and toolroom operators to hand-grind custom cutting geometries for turning, boring, threading, and profiling operations on manual lathes and mill-drill setups. WKE45 cobalt HSS provides elevated hot hardness compared to standard M2 high-speed steel, making it well-suited for cutting harder ferrous materials and applications involving higher cutting temperatures. This blank ships as a single piece ready for bench grinding or surface grinding to a finished tool profile.
This tool bit blank is used in toolroom and production machining environments where a custom-ground cutting edge geometry is required. Typical applications include single-point lathe tools, form tools, and special-purpose cutters shaped to a workpiece-specific profile. The rectangular cross-section and 4-inch length provide adequate stock for most standard tool holder shanks used on engine lathes, turret lathes, and similar manual turning equipment. It is selected by machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians who grind their own tooling to match specific material and finish requirements.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or stock blank for use in standard tool holders and tool posts accepting a 5/16-inch by 7/16-inch rectangular shank on engine lathes and manual turning machines.
Grinding of tool bit blanks should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician using a bench grinder or surface grinder equipped with an appropriate abrasive wheel rated for high-speed steel. Wear appropriate eye and face protection during all grinding operations in accordance with applicable shop safety standards. Ensure the workpiece is secured against the tool rest and that the wheel is dressed and true before grinding. Allow the blank to cool periodically during grinding to prevent overheating, which can reduce the temper and hardness of the cobalt steel.
