The SECO 17016579 is a single-end roughing end mill designed for aggressive material removal in milling operations. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel with a TiCN coating, it delivers elevated heat resistance and wear performance compared to standard HSS tooling. The mill measures 5/16 inch (0.3125 inch) in diameter with a 3/8 inch shank diameter and a 3/4 inch length of cut. The 4-flute, right-hand spiral configuration with a 30-degree maximum helix angle supports efficient chip evacuation and stable cutting across a range of workpiece materials. Overall length is 2-1/2 inches. This tool is installed and operated by machinists and toolroom technicians in production and job-shop environments.
The 17016579 is suited for roughing passes on ferrous and non-ferrous metals in vertical and horizontal milling machines and machining centers. Its short flute length and rigid 3/8 inch shank make it appropriate for applications where vibration control and tool stiffness are priorities. The centercutting geometry allows plunge entry, expanding its versatility in slotting, profiling, and pocketing operations. It is not designed for extended-reach setups and does not include coolant-through capability, making it best suited for flood or mist coolant delivery at the tool exterior.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use roughing end mill for standard 3/8 inch collet or end mill holder setups on conventional and CNC milling machines.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Ensure the milling machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before loading or changing the tool. Seat the 3/8 inch shank fully and evenly in the collet or holder and torque the retention nut to the machine manufacturer's specification. Verify runout with a dial indicator before beginning a cut, as excessive runout will accelerate wear on this style of coated end mill.
