The SECO 17002031 is a solid carbide ball end mill in the STB440 series, designed for high-performance milling in steel, cast iron, aluminum, and non-ferrous materials. The cutter measures 3/16 inches (0.1875 inches) in diameter with a 7/16 inches (0.4375 inches) length of cut and a 2 inches overall length. Four flutes with a variable helix and right-hand spiral configuration support both roughing and finishing operations in a single tool. An AlTiN PVD coating provides thermal resistance and wear protection at elevated cutting temperatures. Micrograin carbide substrate adds toughness and edge retention in demanding applications.
This end mill is suited for short-reach profiling, slotting, and contouring operations on CNC machining centers and manual mills. Its single-end, straight-cylindrical shank fits standard collet chucks and end mill holders sized for 3/16 inches shanks. The short length type keeps deflection low when cutting ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. It is a center-cutting design, allowing direct plunge entry where the toolpath requires it. Machinists working in job shop and production environments will find the STB440 geometry effective for multi-material work without a tool change.

Installation and tool changes must be performed with the machine spindle fully stopped and locked out per shop safety procedures. Ensure the collet or end mill holder is clean and free of debris before seating the shank to maintain runout within specification. Verify tool stick-out and holding torque per the toolholder manufacturer guidelines before initiating a cut. TIR should be checked at setup; maximum rated TIR for this tool is 0.0005 inches.
