The SECO 10001184 is a spiral point tap designed for through-hole threading in demanding materials including stainless steel, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, titanium, and hardened steel. It is ground from high-speed steel with powder metallurgy enhancement (HSS-E-PM) and finished with an aluminum chromium nitride (AlCrN) coating for improved heat resistance and tool life. The tap cuts a 1/4-28 UNJF thread to a 3B class of fit with a plug chamfer for gradual thread engagement. Overall length is 3.256 inches (80 millimeters) and thread length is 0.591 inches (15 millimeters). Installation is performed by machinists and maintenance technicians in CNC or manual tapping operations.
This tap is suited for production and maintenance threading applications where tight tolerances and thread form integrity are required. The UNJF (Unified National Miniature Fine) thread standard is specified in aerospace and high-strength fastener applications where root radius geometry reduces stress concentration. The right-hand spiral point style pushes chips ahead of the tap through the hole, making it appropriate for through-hole applications rather than blind holes. The 3-flute configuration balances chip clearance and tool body strength at this diameter.
Designed for through-hole tapping of 1/4-28 UNJF threads in stainless steel, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, titanium, and hardened steel. Belongs to SECO MTP series spiral point taps.
Installation is performed by machinists using CNC machining centers, drill presses, or manual tapping equipment. Ensure the workpiece is rigidly fixtured and the tap is properly aligned before engagement to avoid tap breakage. This tap does not have coolant-through capability, so flood or mist coolant should be applied externally when threading heat-sensitive materials such as stainless steel or titanium. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and manufacturer feed rate recommendations for the specific workpiece material.
