The SECO 05146 is a solid cobalt tool bit blank machined to a 5/8-inch width, 5/8-inch height, and 6-inch overall length. Manufactured from WKE45-grade cobalt high-speed steel, this blank serves as raw stock for machinists and toolmakers who grind custom cutting tool profiles to specific geometry requirements. The round end shape allows for flexible grinding in multiple orientations. WKE45 cobalt HSS delivers higher red hardness and heat resistance compared to standard M2 high-speed steel, making it suitable for cutting harder workpiece materials at elevated temperatures without losing edge integrity.
This tool bit blank is used in machine shops, tool rooms, and production environments where custom-ground single-point lathe tools, boring bars, or specialty form tools are required. It is appropriate for use on manual engine lathes, turret lathes, and manual milling setups. Machinists working with stainless steel, titanium, and other difficult-to-machine alloys often select cobalt blanks over standard HSS for their improved wear resistance and thermal stability under heavy cuts.
Designed as a general-purpose cobalt HSS tool bit blank for use in standard 5/8-inch tool holders and grinding fixtures on manual lathes and milling machines.
Grinding of tool bit blanks should be performed by qualified machinists using appropriate bench or surface grinders fitted with aluminum oxide or CBN wheels rated for high-speed steel. Always wear eye protection and use a tool rest when grinding. Ensure the workpiece is properly cooled during grinding to avoid overheating the cutting edge and degrading the cobalt alloy hardness. Finished tools should be inspected for geometry before installation in a tool holder.
