The SECO 03280015 is a CNMG431-M3 series indexable turning insert designed for precision metal cutting in CNC turning centers and manual lathes. Built from solid carbide with a CVD-applied Duratomic multilayer coating — TiCN, Al2O3, and Cr — this insert delivers thermal resistance and wear life suited for interrupted and continuous cuts. The 80-degree diamond shape with a negative rake angle and chamfered-and-honed cutting edge provides strength at the tip while controlling chip flow through the M3 chip breaker geometry. With four cutting edges per insert, tooling cost per edge is kept low. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in job shops or production environments will find this insert suited for demanding turning operations.
This insert is engineered primarily for stainless steel (ISO material group M, grades M30 and M40) with secondary suitability for general steel (ISO group P). Applicable operations include turning, facing, and boring. The M3 chip breaker geometry is optimized for medium-depth cuts and moderate feed rates common in stainless steel finishing and semi-finishing passes. The insert is rated to a maximum depth of cut of 0.4921 inches and fits tool holders using clamp, pin, or lever lock holding methods — covering a wide range of CNMG-compatible tooling systems.

Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct torque wrench and manufacturer-specified fastener for the holder type — clamp, pin, or lever lock — to avoid insert movement under cutting load. Inspect the seat pocket for chips or debris before seating a new insert, as contamination will affect runout and edge life.
