The SECO 03115947 is a 6-flute solid carbide ball end mill from the SB638 series, designed for high-performance material removal in demanding machining applications. It features a 3/8 inch mill diameter, a 1 inch length of cut, and a 2.5 inch overall length with a straight-cylindrical 3/8 inch shank. The tool carries an AlTiN PVD coating applied to a micrograin carbide substrate, delivering heat resistance and surface hardness suited to dry or semi-dry cutting. A 38-degree medium helix angle and variable index geometry reduce chatter and improve chip evacuation in difficult materials.
This end mill is intended for milling steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium — workpiece material codes P, M, K, and S. It is configured as a single-end, right-hand cut tool with right-hand flute direction. The SB638 series targets roughing applications where tool rigidity and coating durability matter. Typical use cases include profiling, slotting, and contour milling on CNC machining centers in production shop environments. The ball nose geometry produces a 0.1875 inch nose radius, making it suitable for 3D contouring and sculpted-surface finishing passes as well.
Designed for use in standard CNC machining centers accepting a 3/8 inch straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials are steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium. SECO catalog reference: SB638-0.375-D3-B.0-Z6.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the machine tool manufacturer guidelines for tool holding and runout verification. Confirm shank seating and collet torque per the toolholder specification before starting a cut. Verify spindle RPM and feed rate are programmed to match the coating and substrate requirements for the target workpiece material. Do not exceed the rated depth of cut for the flute length or shank diameter.
