The SECO 03096659 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VBMT series, designed for precision finishing operations on steel and stainless steel workpieces. It carries the F1 chip breaker geometry and TP3501 manufacturer grade with a CVD-applied Duratomic multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and Cr. This coating delivers moderate wear resistance combined with solid toughness, making it well suited for continuous and semi-interrupted cuts at finishing depths. The insert features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, a 1/32-inch corner radius, and 4 usable cutting edges. Neutral hand orientation allows flexible toolholder pairing. Machinists and CNC turning specialists install this insert in indexable toolholders on manual and CNC lathes.
This insert is intended for finishing passes on steel (ISO P-grade materials including P20, P30, P40) and stainless steel (ISO M-grade). Supported operations include turning, back turning, facing, and profiling. The sharp cutting edge style and F1 chip breaker work together to produce controlled chip evacuation and good surface finish at typical finishing feed rates. The positive rake and positive side clearance geometry reduce cutting forces, which is beneficial when machining thin-walled parts or when minimizing deflection is critical. It conforms to both ANSI (VBMT332-F1) and ISO (VBMT160408-F1) insert standards.
Fits indexable toolholders designed for VBMT-style inserts conforming to ANSI size code 332 and ISO size code 160408. Screw-clamping toolholder required. Verify seat geometry and clamping screw size against your toolholder specifications before installing.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing the insert. Use the correct torque wrench for the clamping screw to avoid seat damage — refer to your toolholder manufacturer documentation for the specified value. Inspect the insert seat and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating a new edge.
