The SECO 02960917 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VBMT-M3 series, designed for precision metal cutting in CNC and manual turning operations. It carries the industry standard designation VBMT331-M3 and is manufactured to both ANSI and ISO standards. The insert features a 35-degree diamond shape with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and a 1/64-inch corner radius. The CVD-applied Duratomic multilayer coating — TiCN, Al2O3, and Cr — provides wear resistance and thermal stability during continuous or interrupted cuts. Two cutting edges are available per insert, and the M3 chip breaker geometry promotes controlled chip formation across a range of feed rates and depths.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, back turning, and profiling operations. It is rated for primary use on steel workpieces and carries P10, P20, P30, and P35 material grade designations. Secondary workpiece materials include stainless steel and cast iron. The neutral hand orientation makes it compatible with standard right-hand toolholders configured for VBMT-style inserts. A screw-clamping holding method is used, and the positive rake geometry reduces cutting forces, which is an advantage when machining harder steels or thin-walled components. This insert is sold individually with a minimum order quantity of 10 pieces.

This insert is installed by machinists and CNC tooling technicians. Before indexing or replacing an insert, confirm the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out per shop lockout-tagout procedures. Seat the insert firmly against the toolholder pocket locating surfaces before tightening the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque. Inspect the insert seat and clamping components for chips or debris that could prevent proper seating and cause premature edge failure.
