The SECO 02960912 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VBMT-M3 series, designed for precision metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the industry standard designation VBMT332-M3 and ISO code VBMT160408-M3. The insert features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a positive rake and positive side clearance, a 3/8 inch inscribed circle, and a 1/32 inch (0.0315 inch) corner radius. The CVD-applied Duratomic multilayer coating — TiCN, Al2O3, and Cr — delivers high wear resistance across finishing and medium machining operations. Two cutting edges per insert and screw-type holding make it a cost-effective choice for high-volume turning applications.
This insert is suited for finishing and medium machining of steel and cast iron components in both residential-shop and industrial production environments. Its M3 chip breaker geometry supports back turning, facing, profiling, and straight turning operations. The TP1501 grade targets ISO material groups P and K, making it applicable to carbon steels, alloy steels, and gray or ductile cast iron workpieces. Insert indexing and replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine in a full stop, spindle locked, and all power isolated per shop lockout/tagout procedures. Use the appropriate torx or hex key specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the clamping screw — do not overtighten. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating a new insert. Verify seating and runout before returning the machine to production cuts.
