The SECO 02960902 is a solid carbide turning insert in the DCMT-M3 series, designed for precision metal cutting in CNC and manual turning operations. The insert carries the industry designation DCMT21.51-M3 and is manufactured to ANSI and ISO standards. It features a 55-degree diamond shape, a 1/4-inch inscribed circle, and a 1/64-inch corner radius. The multilayer CVD coating stack — TiCN, Al2O3, and Cr — is applied under the Duratomic coating classification, delivering high wear resistance and thermal stability. With two cutting edges and an M3 chip breaker geometry, this insert balances chip control with surface finish across a range of cutting depths up to 0.2441 inches. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in job shops and production environments are the primary installers.
This insert is engineered primarily for cutting steel, with secondary suitability for cast iron and hard materials. The neutral hand orientation and positive rake angle make it well suited for back turning, boring, facing, and general external turning operations. The M3 chip breaker geometry handles medium-depth passes effectively, making it appropriate for both roughing and semi-finishing passes on ferrous workpieces. It is retained in the toolholder by screw clamping, which is standard for DCMT-style pocket systems. The Duratomic coating process targets material grades P10 and P20 steel, where tool life and edge consistency are critical production factors.
Designed for use in DCMT-series screw-clamp toolholders conforming to ANSI and ISO pocket specifications for DCMT21.51 inserts. Primary workpiece material is steel (P10, P20); secondary materials include cast iron and hard materials.
Installation is performed by machinists or CNC setup technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key for the clamping screw and do not overtighten, as carbide inserts can crack under excessive clamp force. Inspect the toolholder pocket for wear or debris before seating a new insert to ensure proper contact and edge registration.
