The SECO 02960784 is a TNMG544-M5 triangular turning insert in grade TP1501, manufactured from solid carbide with a CVD-applied Duratomic multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and Cr. The insert features a negative rake geometry, a 0-degree relief angle (clearance code N), and a chamfered and honed cutting edge style. With 6 usable cutting edges and a 5/8-inch (0.6250-inch) inscribed circle, it delivers consistent tool life in high-volume turning operations. The M5 chip breaker geometry is optimized for medium-depth cuts in steel and cast iron. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in production turning environments rely on this insert for back turning, boring, facing, and general OD turning.
This insert is designed for primary use on steel workpieces (ISO material code P, material grades P10 and P20) and is also rated for secondary applications on cast iron and hard materials (ISO codes K and H). Typical applications include medium to roughing turning passes on lathes equipped with TNMG-style toolholders using clamp, pin, or lever-lock insert retention. The maximum depth of cut reaches 0.9291 inches, making it suitable for aggressive material removal as well as finish passes. It is well suited to production shops running CNC turning centers where consistent insert geometry and repeatable edge performance are required.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-fit insert for TNMG-style toolholders accepting a 544 insert size with a 0.2500-inch hole diameter and lever-lock, clamp, or pin retention. Verify toolholder pocket geometry and insert seat dimensions before installation.
Insert installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician following the toolholder manufacturer's clamping torque and retention guidelines. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Inspect the toolholder pocket and seating surface for debris or wear before seating the new insert. Do not exceed the rated maximum depth of cut or feed rate range specified for the toolholder and insert combination.
