The SECO 02960724 is a solid carbide turning insert in the DNMU-MF5 series, designed for precision metal cutting in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron applications. It carries the TP2501 manufacturer grade and features a multilayer CVD coating — TiCN, Al2O3, and Cr — marketed under the Duratomic coating classification for improved wear resistance and thermal stability. The insert has a 55-degree diamond shape, a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, a 1/64-inch corner radius, and a negative rake geometry with a chamfered and honed cutting edge. Four cutting edges are available per insert. The MF5 chip breaker geometry targets medium finishing operations. Machinists and CNC operators working in production turning environments are the primary installers.
This insert is suited for back turning, boring, facing, and turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Primary workpiece material is steel (ISO P code), with secondary suitability for stainless steel (ISO M) and cast iron (ISO K). Material grades P10, P20, P30, and P35 are listed as applicable. The neutral hand orientation makes it compatible with both left-hand and right-hand toolholders that accept DNMU-style inserts. Installation is performed by a machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket and verify the clamping mechanism — clamp, pin, or lever lock — is engaged correctly before resuming operation. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut of 0.0787 inches for this insert geometry, and inspect the cutting edge for wear at regular intervals to maintain workpiece tolerance.
