The SECO 02960522 is a solid carbide turning insert in the SNMG-M5 series, designed for external and internal turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the industry standard designation SNMG543-M5 and ISO code SNMG150612-M5. The insert features a CVD-applied Duratomic multilayer coating — TiCN, Al2O3, and Cr — classified under manufacturer grade TP2501. With 8 cutting edges, a negative rake geometry, and a chamfered and honed cutting edge style, this insert delivers consistent tool life across demanding production runs. The M5 chip breaker geometry is engineered for medium machining conditions.
This insert is suited for machining steel as the primary workpiece material (ISO P grade), with secondary capability on stainless steel (ISO M) and cast iron (ISO K). It is appropriate for medium roughing to semi-finishing passes at moderate depths. The multi-use design supports boring, facing, and turning in a single insert style, reducing the number of insert grades needed in a tool crib. It is installed by machinists and tooling technicians in both job shop and production environments.
Designed for use in SNMG-style toolholders that accept clamp, pin, or lever lock holding methods. Compatible with ISO P10, P20, P30, and P35 material grade applications. Primary workpiece material is steel; secondary materials include stainless steel and cast iron. Installation is performed by a machinist or tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or indexing the insert. Ensure the toolholder pocket and clamping surfaces are clean and free of chips before inserting. Confirm the clamping torque specification in the toolholder manufacturer documentation — do not use hand-feel estimates on lever lock or pin-type holders. Index to a fresh cutting edge at the first sign of built-up edge or surface finish degradation rather than running the edge to failure.
