The SECO 02960494 is a solid carbide turning insert in the CNMG-M5 series, designed for precision metal removal in CNC and manual turning applications. It carries the industry standard designation CNMG544-M5 and ISO code CNMG160616-M5. The insert features a Duratomic CVD coating — a multilayer stack of TiCN, Al2O3, and Cr — engineered to extend tool life on steel and cast iron workpieces. The diamond 80-degree insert shape with a negative rake and 0-degree relief angle provides a strong cutting edge well suited to interrupted cuts and general roughing to semi-finishing operations. Four usable cutting edges per insert reduce tooling cost per part.
This insert is intended for boring, facing, and turning on ferrous materials, primarily steel (ISO material code P) and secondarily cast iron and hard materials (ISO codes K and H). It fits into CNMG-style holders with clamp, pin, or lever-lock holding methods. Typical use is in production turning on CNC lathes and turning centers in industrial, manufacturing, and job-shop environments. It is installed by machinists and CNC operators and suits applications requiring consistent performance across medium-depth roughing and semi-finishing passes on steel components.
Designed for use in CNMG-style turning toolholders that accept a 5/8-inch inscribed circle insert with a 1/4-inch thickness and 1/4-inch hole diameter. Compatible holding methods include clamp, pin, and lever lock. Conforms to ANSI and ISO standards for CNMG insert geometry.
Installation is performed by machinists or CNC operators. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the pocket locating surfaces and torque the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specification before resuming cuts. Inspect the cutting edge, chip breaker, and coating condition at each index to confirm the insert has not reached end of life.
