The SECO 02960492 is a CNMG-style indexable turning insert designed for metal-cutting applications on CNC lathes and turning centers. It features a diamond 80-degree insert shape with a negative rake geometry and a neutral hand orientation. The insert is manufactured from solid carbide and coated via CVD with a multilayer Duratomic coating consisting of TiCN, Al2O3, and Cr layers, which provides thermal resistance and extended tool life in interrupted and continuous cuts. The M5 chip breaker geometry is suited for medium-depth passes on steel and stainless steel. Four cutting edges are available per insert, reducing tooling cost per edge. The insert meets ANSI and ISO dimensional standards under ISO code CNMG160608-M5.
This insert is intended for turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC turning centers and manual lathes equipped with CNMG-compatible toolholders using clamp, pin, or lever-lock holding methods. Primary workpiece material is steel, with secondary suitability for stainless steel and cast iron. Material grades P10, P20, P30, and P35 are within the recommended application range. This insert is appropriate for job shops, production machining facilities, and maintenance environments where medium-material steel turning is routine. Licensed machinists and CNC operators are the primary installers and users.
Designed for use in CNMG-series toolholders accepting a 5/8-inch inscribed circle insert with a 1/4-inch thickness and 1/4-inch hole diameter. Compatible holding methods include clamp, pin, and lever-lock systems. Suitable for steel (P), stainless steel (M), and cast iron (K) workpiece materials per ISO material classification.
Insert seating and clamping should be performed with the machine powered down and the spindle locked. Ensure the toolholder pocket and seating surface are clean and free of chips before indexing or replacing the insert. Use the appropriate torque wrench per the toolholder manufacturer's specifications when tightening clamp screws. Cutting parameters including feed rate, depth of cut, and spindle speed should be set according to the workpiece material grade and machine rigidity before resuming operation.
