The SECO 02959981 is a solid carbide indexable turning insert in the SNMG-M3 series, designed for general-purpose metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries a CVD-applied Duratomic multilayer coating — TiCN, Al2O3, and Cr — in manufacturer grade TP2501, targeting steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpieces. The insert is 3/4 inch inscribed circle, 3/4 inch in length and width, 1/4 inch thick, with a 0.063-inch corner radius and a chamfered-and-honed cutting edge. Eight usable cutting edges are available per insert, delivering strong cost-per-edge value in high-volume production environments. Installed by machinists and toolroom technicians, this insert fits toolholders using clamp, pin, or lever-lock holding methods.
The 02959981 is suited for boring, facing, and turning operations across a broad range of cutting conditions. Its M3 chip breaker geometry handles roughing to semi-finishing on steel and stainless steel and performs reliably on cast iron. Material grades P10, P20, P30, and P35 indicate compatibility with a wide range of steel cutting parameters at varying feeds and depths. Maximum depth of cut reaches 0.687 inch, making it useful in aggressive stock-removal passes as well as finishing work. The negative rake and 90-degree square geometry provide strong insert support and predictable edge behavior under interrupted or continuous cuts.

Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or indexing the insert. Ensure the toolholder pocket and clamp seating surfaces are clean and free of chips before securing the insert. Verify torque on the clamping screw or lever mechanism per the toolholder manufacturer specifications before resuming cuts.
