The SECO 02959979 is a solid carbide turning insert in the SNMG-M3 series, designed for general-purpose metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries a CVD-applied Duratomic multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and Cr for wear resistance and thermal stability at the cutting edge. The insert features a 90-degree square geometry with a negative rake angle, an M3 chip breaker, and a chamfered and honed cutting edge. With 8 usable cutting edges per insert, it delivers consistent performance across roughing and semi-finishing operations. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert in standard SNMG-compatible toolholders.
This insert is rated for primary use on steel workpieces (ISO material group P, grades P10 through P35) and is also suitable for stainless steel (group M) and cast iron (group K). Typical applications include turning, facing, and boring operations. The M3 chip breaker geometry is optimized for medium-depth passes on steel and stainless. The insert is offered in Neutral hand orientation, making it adaptable to both right- and left-hand toolholder setups. It meets both ANSI and ISO dimensional standards and carries the ISO code SNMG150612-M3 for cross-reference purposes.
Designed for use in SNMG-compatible toolholders that accept a 5/8 inch inscribed circle square insert with a 0.250 inch hole diameter. Compatible with clamp, pin, and lever-lock holding systems. Suitable for steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpieces per ISO material groups P, M, and K.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator. Power down and lock out the machine before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and insert screw as specified by the toolholder manufacturer when securing the insert clamp or lever-lock mechanism. Inspect the insert seat and clamping hardware for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper contact and edge registration.
