The SECO 02959961 is a VNMG331-M3 indexable turning insert manufactured from solid carbide with a CVD-applied Duratomic multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and Cr. Carrying manufacturer grade TP2501, it is designed for external turning operations including back turning, facing, profiling, and general turning. The insert features a 35-degree diamond shape, a neutral hand orientation, and a chamfered and honed cutting edge for controlled chip formation. With four usable cutting edges and an M3 chip breaker geometry, this insert delivers consistent performance on steel and stainless steel in production machining environments. It is installed by machinists and CNC toolroom technicians on lathes and turning centers.
This insert is suited for turning steel (ISO material code P), stainless steel (M), and cast iron (K). It fits within the VNMG-M3 series toolholder system and is appropriate for roughing, semi-finishing, and finishing passes where the M3 chip breaker geometry is specified. Typical applications include shaft work, facing operations, and contour profiling on both manual and CNC turning equipment. Material grades P10, P20, P30, and P35 are supported. The insert conforms to both ANSI and ISO standards, with ISO code VNMG160404-M3 and industry standard number VNMG331-M3.
Designed for use in VNMG-series toolholders that accept a 35-degree diamond insert with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, M tolerance, N clearance, and clamp, pin, or lever lock holding. Verify toolholder pocket specifications before installation.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamping hardware specified by the toolholder manufacturer — do not overtighten the clamp screw. Inspect the insert pocket seat for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper contact and runout.
