Product Description

The SECO 02959911 is a CNMG431-M3 series indexable turning insert manufactured from solid carbide with a CVD-applied Duratomic multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and Cr. It carries the TP2501 manufacturer grade and is designed for negative-rake, neutral-hand turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The insert features an 80-degree diamond shape, a 0.0157-inch corner radius, and an M3 chip breaker geometry suited for medium-depth finishing and semi-finishing passes. Four cutting edges are available per insert. Primary target material is steel across ISO P10 through P35 grades.

This insert is used in facing, boring, and turning applications on steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpieces. It is appropriate for both light and medium stock removal in production machining environments where consistent chip control and tool life across material grades are required. The M3 chip breaker geometry accommodates a range of depths of cut up to 0.4921 inches, making it adaptable across roughing and finishing transitions without changing tooling. Machinists running production runs on P- and M-class workpiece materials will find the TP2501 grade suited to moderate speeds with coolant or dry.

Key Features

  • CVD Duratomic coating (TiCN plus Al2O3 plus Cr) for wear resistance and thermal stability on steel and stainless
  • 80-degree diamond insert shape with negative rake and N clearance for rigid, stable cutting
  • M3 chip breaker geometry with chamfered and honed cutting edge for controlled chip flow
  • Four usable cutting edges per insert — clamp, pin, or lever lock holding methods supported
  • Maximum depth of cut of 0.4921 inches with 0.5-inch inscribed circle diameter
  • Meets ANSI and ISO standards; ISO designation CNMG120404-M3

Compatibility

Designed to fit CNMG-style toolholders accepting a 0.5-inch inscribed circle insert with N clearance, M tolerance, and center-hole diameter of 0.2028 inches. Compatible holding methods include clamp, pin, and lever lock. Applicable across boring, facing, and turning operations per the M3 series designation.

Installation Notes

Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Ensure the toolholder pocket is clean and free of chips before seating the insert. Use the appropriate clamping method — clamp, pin, or lever lock — as specified by the toolholder manufacturer. Index to a fresh cutting edge or replace the insert when flank wear, chipping, or surface finish degradation is observed; do not continue cutting on a worn edge, as this risks workpiece damage and toolholder wear.
