The SECO 02902980 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the X4 series, designed for external grooving and parting operations on CNC turning centers and lathes. It carries the grade designation CP500 with a PVD-applied TiAlN and TiN coating for extended tool life across a wide range of workpiece materials. The insert features a 2.15 mm cutting width, a maximum depth of cut of 6 mm, and a positive rake angle of 6 degrees, making it well-suited for efficient chip evacuation. A clamp-style holding method secures the insert in compatible X4 toolholders. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians are the typical installers.
This insert is rated for universal primary workpiece material compatibility, covering material groups H, K, M, N, O, P, and S per ISO classification. That range includes cast iron, non-ferrous metals, steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and non-metallic materials. The FG chip breaker geometry and double-end configuration make it practical for both production turning and job-shop grooving work. It is suited for residential shop and industrial manufacturing environments where precise groove width control and repeatable tool life are required.
Designed for use with SECO X4 series grooving toolholders and compatible clamp-style insert seats accepting size code 2503015 inserts. Primary workpiece material codes per ISO: H, K, M, N, O, P, and S.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine powered down and spindle locked. Use the appropriate torx or hex key specified by the toolholder manufacturer to seat the clamp securely without overtightening. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp for chips or debris before seating a new insert. Follow all applicable shop safety procedures and machine guarding requirements before resuming operation.
