The SECO 02688978 is a solid carbide milling insert carrying the manufacturer designation ONMU090520ANTN-MD16 and grade MK1500. This double-sided octagon-shaped insert features 16 cutting edges, a TiCN and Al2O3 CVD-applied Duratomic coating, and a negative rake angle with a T-Land cutting edge style. The insert measures 0.8661 inches in inscribed circle diameter and 0.2189 inches thick, with a maximum depth of cut of 0.2874 inches. It is designed for face and shoulder milling operations and is installed by machinists and tooling technicians in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is suited for milling cast iron workpieces, corresponding to ISO material group K. Its octagon geometry, neutral hand orientation, and screw-type holding method make it a practical choice for high-edge-count face milling applications where insert economy and consistent tool life are priorities. The double-sided configuration doubles available cutting edges before the insert is discarded, reducing per-edge tooling cost in medium-to-high-volume machining operations on cast iron components.
Compatible with cutter series R220.48-09 and L220.48-09 per manufacturer specification. This insert follows ANSI and ISO designation ONMU090520ANTN-MD16 within the ONMU-09 series.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to tighten the clamping screw to the cutter body manufacturer's specified torque — do not overtighten, as carbide inserts are brittle and can crack under excess clamping force. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or damage before installing a new insert.
