The SECO 02147 is a square tool bit blank ground from WKE45 cobalt high-speed steel, intended for use by machinists and tool-and-die professionals who grind custom cutting edges to specific geometries. Measuring 5 mm wide by 5 mm high with an overall length of 63 mm, this blank provides a consistent, uniform cross-section that machines cleanly and holds a ground edge well under demanding cutting conditions. WKE45 cobalt HSS offers enhanced hardness and heat resistance compared to standard M2 HSS, making it suitable for harder workpiece materials and interrupted cuts. This blank ships individually and requires no further cutting-tool holder modifications before grinding.
This tool bit blank is suited for use in manual and CNC lathes, shapers, planers, and other machine-tool applications where a ground single-point or form tool is required. Typical applications include turning, boring, threading, and profiling operations on ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The 5 mm square cross-section fits standard small-bore tool post holders and lantern-style holders commonly used on bench lathes and precision toolroom machines. It is appropriate for both production shops and toolroom environments where custom tool geometry is needed.
Designed as a general-purpose tool bit blank for use in any small-bore tool post or holder accepting a 5 mm square shank, including lantern-style and quick-change toolpost holders sized for 5 mm blanks.
Grinding of tool bit blanks should be performed by a qualified machinist using a bench or tool-and-cutter grinder fitted with an appropriate wheel for high-speed steel. Secure the blank firmly in the grinder fixture before engaging the wheel, and use coolant or frequent quenching to prevent overheating the cutting edge, which can anneal the cobalt HSS and reduce hardness. Ensure the machine tool is fully de-energized and locked out before seating the finished tool in any tool post or holder. Follow applicable shop safety standards and manufacturer recommendations for wheel speed and dressing intervals.
