The SECO 02144 is a square tool bit blank machined from WKE45-grade cobalt high-speed steel. It measures 3/8 inches wide by 3/8 inches high with an overall length of 6 inches. Tool bit blanks are unground stock used by machinists and tool grinders to produce custom single-point lathe tools, form tools, and specialty cutting profiles. The cobalt content in WKE45 raises red hardness and wear resistance compared to standard M2 HSS, making this blank well suited for grinding tools intended to cut tough alloys, stainless steel, and hardened workpiece materials.
This blank is used in machine shops, toolrooms, and production environments where custom ground tooling is required. Machinists grind the blank to a specific profile and relief angle on a bench or surface grinder before mounting in a tool post or holder. The square cross section fits standard square-bore tool holders and lantern-style tool posts common on engine lathes. It is appropriate for both production grinding and one-off custom tool fabrication.
Designed as a standard square tool bit blank for use in engine lathe tool posts and square-bore tool holders accepting 3/8-inch tooling.
Grinding this blank to a cutting tool requires a bench grinder or surface grinder equipped with an appropriate wheel for high-speed steel. Secure the blank firmly in a grinding fixture or vise to maintain consistent angles during shaping. Allow the blank to cool frequently during grinding to prevent drawing the temper of the cobalt steel. Once ground, mount the finished tool in a rigid tool holder and ensure proper overhang and clamping before engaging the workpiece.
