The SECO 02074 is a solid cobalt tool bit blank ground to a round end profile and designed for use in custom tooling applications where the end user grinds the final cutting geometry. Made from WKE45-grade cobalt high-speed steel, this blank measures 0.5 inches wide by 0.5 inches high by 4 inches overall length. WKE45 cobalt provides elevated hot hardness and wear resistance compared to standard M2 high-speed steel, making it well suited for machining tough alloys, stainless steel, and other difficult-to-cut materials. Machinists and tool room professionals typically use blanks like this to produce single-point lathe tools, boring tools, form tools, and other custom cutting tools ground to specific geometry.
This tool bit blank is intended for use in manual and CNC metal-cutting operations where a shop-ground or custom-profiled cutting tool is required. The round end geometry allows the user to orient the blank freely before grinding, providing flexibility when developing a specific rake, relief, or profile angle. Common install scenarios include tool room applications in job shops, production machining facilities, and maintenance-and-repair operations working with ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The 4-inch overall length provides adequate stock for grinding and re-sharpening over the service life of the tool.
Designed as an unground tool bit blank compatible with standard 0.5 inches square tool bit holders and bench or surface grinders used in lathe and general machining toolroom applications.
Grinding of this blank should be performed by a qualified machinist or tool room technician using appropriate wheel dressing and grinding coolant to prevent overheating and loss of temper in the cobalt steel. Eye protection and proper wheel guards are required during all grinding operations. Secure the blank firmly in a tool grinder work rest or vise before grinding to maintain accurate geometry. Allow the blank to cool adequately between grinding passes to preserve material hardness.
