The SECO 02058 is a square tool bit blank ground from WKE45 cobalt high-speed steel. It measures 0.630 inches wide by 0.630 inches high with an overall length of 6.299 inches. Tool bit blanks are unground, solid stock pieces that machinists and tool grinders profile into custom single-point cutting tools, form tools, or specialty inserts. The WKE45 cobalt grade provides elevated red hardness and wear resistance compared to standard M2 HSS, making it well suited for turning harder ferrous materials, stainless steels, and heat-resistant alloys. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary users of this type of blank.
This blank is appropriate for use in manual and CNC lathes, boring bars, and toolpost setups where a custom-ground cutting profile is required. The square cross section allows the blank to be presented at multiple orientations in a standard toolholder or lantern post, giving the tool grinder flexibility when laying out rake, clearance, and chip-breaker geometry. It is commonly used in toolrooms, maintenance shops, and job shops that grind their own tooling to specific part geometries.
Designed as a standard square tool bit blank for use in toolholders, lantern posts, and boring bar setups that accept 0.630 inch square shank tool bits.
Grinding cobalt HSS blanks requires a suitable aluminum oxide or CBN grinding wheel rated for high-speed steel; do not use silicon carbide wheels intended for non-ferrous materials. Eye protection and a properly dressed wheel are required throughout the grinding operation. Secure the blank firmly in a tool grinder rest or fixture before grinding to maintain consistent geometry. Allow the blank to cool between grinding passes to avoid drawing the temper of the cobalt steel.
