The SECO 02008 is a square tool bit blank ground from WKE45-grade cobalt high-speed steel. It measures 5/16 inches wide by 5/16 inches high with an 8-inch overall length. Tool bit blanks are unground cutting tool stock used by machinists and tool grinders to fabricate custom lathe tools, form tools, and single-point cutters. The WKE45 cobalt grade offers increased heat resistance and wear resistance compared to standard M2 high-speed steel, making it well suited for interrupted cuts and harder work materials. Machinists and toolroom personnel grind these blanks to a specific geometry using a bench grinder or surface grinder before mounting in a tool holder.
This blank is used in toolroom environments wherever a custom cutting tool geometry is required. Common applications include fabricating turning tools, boring bars, threading tools, and fly cutter bits for manual and CNC lathes and mills. The square cross-section simplifies orientation in standard tool holders and quick-change toolposts. It is appropriate for both job shop and production toolroom use where standard insert tooling does not meet the required profile.
Designed as a general-purpose tool bit blank compatible with standard 5/16-inch tool holders and quick-change toolpost blocks used on manual and CNC lathes and mills.
Grinding and shaping of tool bit blanks should be performed by a qualified machinist or tool grinder using appropriate wheel grades for high-speed steel. Eye protection and proper wheel guards are required during grinding operations. Ensure the tool holder or toolpost is fully clamped and the machine spindle is locked before securing a finished tool. Follow applicable shop safety procedures when handling freshly ground tools, as edges are extremely sharp.
